Quest Values Compass
Discover your leadership DNA
Welcome to your Quest
We tell ourselves we make decisions with intellect, but we actually make them based on emotions driven by our Values [cite: 3-5].
In this interactive exercise, you will:
- Reflect on 40+ common values.
- Sort them based on importance to you.
- Discover your core motivators and potential blindspots.
Step 1 & 2: Reflection
Below is a list of 40 common values. Before we start sorting, think of two additional values you see in action in your work or community that aren't listed, and add them below.
Step 3: The Broad Sort
Sort the values into three columns based on whether they are Always, Sometimes, or Never important to you. Don't overthink it!

Always
Sometimes
Never
Step 4: Take a Break
Clear your mind. Get a snack. Walk the dog.
The important thing is that you let yourself think about something else for a moment.
Step 5: Get Focused
Now we refine. Move values to create 5 categories.
Goal: Max 7 in Always/Never. Max 10 in Sometimes. Max 9 in Often/Rarely.

0/7Often
0/9Sometimes
0/10Rarely

0/7Your Leadership Compass
🌟 ENERGIZING (Always & Often)
Core Values: Honoring these feels natural. You gravitate toward leaders and projects that share these values. [cite: 88, 93]
⚖️ CLARITY (Sometimes)
Logical Approach: These don't inspire much emotion. You can weigh these logically in decisions because you lack deep attachment. [cite: 116, 119]
🛑 DRAINING (Rarely & Never)
Triggers: Weighing these feels unnatural. You may see projects focused on these as a waste of time or irritating. [cite: 101, 108]
Next Steps [cite: 136]
Your team culture is the result of these individual values. Deliberately negotiating shared values can prevent conflict[cite: 124].
Consider discussing these results with a certified Quest Coach.
